Starting a lawsuit should not feel like setting out on safari. Yet, the language of law is peculiar. Some clients may feel they would be better at tracking exotic animals on a foreign continent than identifying the strange words coming out of opposing lawyers’ mouths. One might not find lions, tigers and bears in a lawsuit, but at least these are recognizable. What about petitions and writs and summonses – Oh my!

A visit to a lawyer might be a voyage into the unknown. Not only can legal language and processes seem foreign, often one only seeks legal help during times of strife. These times are not ideal for learning. Key decisions may need to be made quickly, emotions may be running high, and one may even be experiencing physical or mental challenges that make learning difficult. Yet, understanding what is happening from a legal standpoint is essential to one’s survival in a lawsuit or negotiation.

The client should be master of his or her own destiny. To do this in law requires knowledge of the law, its language and its processes. It regularly also requires the specialized skills and knowledge of an experienced lawyer. Still, no matter how skilled or experienced that lawyer is, it is the client ultimately who makes the major decisions and directs the lawyer’s actions.

How can one person direct another when the two may not be speaking the same language? Here at Pihl Law Corporation, we are dedicated to ensuring our clients are informed and empowered. If a lawyer’s explanations leave a client with questions or if one seeks a little more information about the process, these pages are designed to help.

Welcome to Law for Beginners, where one can find clarification and a basic overview of the civil litigation (lawsuit) process. Anyone requiring further explanation might also peruse our legal dictionary. People in need of legal help might consult one of our knowledgeable lawyers or support staff.
